Box Score

TROY, NY (October 3, 2009) – Facing a two goal deficit after less than 11 minutes of play, the Vassar College women's soccer team was unable to pull off a comeback, dropping a 3-1 Liberty League game to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) on Saturday.

The Brewers fall to 5-5, 1-2 in the Liberty League and have the week off before getting back into league action, at Skidmore College on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Union College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Engineers pick up their first league win as they improve to 5-5-1, 1-2 in the Liberty League.

The Engineers struck for two quick tallies less than 11 minutes into the game and the Brewers were unable to close the gap. Just 57 seconds following the opening kickoff, junior Danielle Redmond got RPI on board off an assist from Briana Bet. Bet sent a through ball into the right side of the box for Redmond to run onto and finish, near-post.

Less than 10 minutes later, Redmond flicked a header into the area and freshman Shannon Maguire delivered for the goal, sending another header over Vassar netminder Ali Higgins and into the back of the net. Redmond assisted on RPI's second goal, at the 10:53 mark, as Shannon Maguire netted her first goal of the game.

The Engineers opened the second half by drawing a penalty kick just 37 seconds in. Maguire buried a shot into the top left corner of the net for her second goal of the game and team-leading eighth of the season, giving the hosts a 3-0 advantage.

Vassar made a dent in the RPI lead as junior Allison McManis recorded her fifth goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Alix Zongrone in the 46th minute. Off an indirect free kick from just outside the six-yard box, Zongrone gave a touch to the top of the ball for McManis who ripped it past RPI goalie Melissa Pinsonneault. Vassar threatened to pull within a goal in the 65th minute, but junior Carolyn Demougeot's shot from inside the 18 was cleared off the line by RPI sophomore Catherine Harvey.

Higgins took the loss for the Brewers, making five saves. For the Engineers, Pinsonneault recorded seven saves in the win.

Vassar and RPI were even with 14 shots and three corner kicks. The Brewers were paced by McManis's three shots, two on goal, while senior Anna Robinson and Demougeot recorded two shots, one on goal apiece.
