NEWBURGH, NY (October 17, 2009) – The Vassar women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to six straight matches with victories over Mount St. Mary and Bard at the Hudson Valley tri-match this afternoon. In the opening match, the Brewers knocked off Mount St. Mary 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-17). In the second match, Vassar was taken to four sets and defeated Bard 3-1 (25-8, 25-16, 22-25, 25-14).
The Brewers, now 16-5 on the season, will have six days off before travelling to Western Connecticut for the first of three matches next Friday and Saturday. Vassar will face host Western Connecticut on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and play both Wesleyan and Babson on Saturday.
Senior
Tess Johnson led the charge against Mount St. Mary, registering 10 kills, nearly a third of the 33 Vassar had in the match. Johnson made only three attack errors in 23 attempts. Freshman
Hilary Koenigs had 28 of 29 set assists for the Brewers.
Vassar's defense was strong against Mount St. Mary, with the team accumulating 47 digs, 10 service aces and 10 block assists. Koenigs had 12 digs in the match and freshman
Hannah Cassius earned a career-high eight in the match.
In the second match against Bard, sophomore
Amy Bavosa led the Brewers with 19 kills and a .516 attack percentage. She had just three attack errors in 31 attempts. Koenigs and Cassius distributed the ball well, securing 17 and 15 set assists respectively to seven different players. Junior
Chelsea Mottern had 16 of the teams 45 digs in the match.
