Field Hockey Upended By William Smith, 4-0

GENEVA, NY (October 10, 2009) – On Saturday afternoon, the Vassar field hockey team ran into a William Smith team that was battling heartily to remain in the Liberty League playoff picture, and for the Herons, losing wasn't an option. The hosts scored two goals in each half to defeat the Brewers 4-0 and remain in the playoff chase. 

Vassar drops to 2-12, 0-5 and will play a non-conference game against SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, October 14 at 4:30 p.m. William Smith improves to 8-4, 2-3 and next hosts Cortland on October 13 at 4:00 p.m. 

The Brewers were limited to a single shot on goal, that coming in the first half from senior Rachel Lowenthal

William Smith got goals from four different players and opened scoring just 5:24 into the game when junior forward Emily Atwan tallied her ninth of the season off Vassar junior goalie Rachel Horwitz. Freshman midfielder Annie Kietzman put the Herons ahead 2-0 in the 25th minute. Horwitz made five saves in the game. 

Vassar kept William Smith off the scoreboard for the first 17 minutes of the second half, but junior midfielder Sarah Gall pushed the Herons ahead 3-0 with a goal in the 52nd minute. Sophomore forward Kiersten Hamilton finished the game's scoring with a goal with nine minutes to play.
