SCHENECTADY, NY (January 30, 2009) -- Although the Vassar College women's basketball team outscored Union College in the second half, Vassar could not recover from a slow first half, as it dropped its sixth straight Liberty League contest, 55-37, on Friday night at Viniar Athletic Center. Vassar managed just eight points in the first seventeen minutes of play.
The Brewers fall to 3-13, and remain winless in league play at 0-6. Vassar will play at Skidmore College tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Union improves to 11-5, 5-1 and stand in a three-way tie RPI and St. Lawrence University at the top of the league standings. Union hosts RPI on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
The Dutchwomen never trailed in the game, and maintained a double-digit lead for the final 31 minutes of the game. The Brewers faced a 36-17 deficit heading into the second half, and though they outscored Union in the final frame, they never managed to cut the Dutchwomen's lead to less than 13.
Vassar's small roster proved a large obstacle in the game, as two players accounted for all but six of the Brewers' points, while all 11 of Union's players scored at least two points. Vassar junior
Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland) notched her tenth double-double of the season, to lead Vassar with 16 points, ten rebounds, and five steals, helping Vassar to out-rebound Union, 38-36. Freshman
Brittany Parks (Escondido, CA/Escondido) added 15 points, her fourth straight game in double digits.
Lauren McCormick (Hoosick Falls, NY/Catholic Central) led Union with 12 points while Leah Pepe (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) came off the bench to chip in with 11 points and seven rebounds. Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY/Bishop Maginn) contributed nine points and ten rebounds.
