Kemp Lifts Women's Soccer to Season-Opening Overtime Victory Over Elms College

Box Score

CHICOPEE, MA (September 6, 2008) -- Vassar College senior forward Emma Kemp (Albany, CA/Albany) scored the game-winning goal 4:57 into the first overtime to lift the Brewers to a 2-1 win over Elms College in Saturday's non-conference women's soccer season opener for both teams at Leary Field.

The Brewers next play on Wednesday, September 10, as they host SUNY-New Paltz at 4:00, inaugurating newly-refurbished Prentiss Field.

With the game tied 1-1 in overtime, Elms College freshman goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, MA) made a beautiful diving stop on a shot by sophomore midfielder Carolyn Demougeot (Potomac, MD/French International), but Kemp swooped in and deposited the rebound past Callahan for the game-winner.

Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, MA) had given the Blazers (0-1) a quick 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when she broke past a Vassar defender and blasted a shot inside the far post past Vassar senior netminder Anne Hutchinson (St. Pete Beach, FL/Tampa Prepartory).

Demougeot knotted the game at 1-1 just 3:55 later when her shot deflected past Callahan and into the net. Kemp recorded the assist.

The Brewers had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 83rd minute, but senior forward Nola Solomon's (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) shot from 25 yards out deflected off the crossbar.

Although Vassar (1-0) held decisive advantages in both shots (26-4) and corner kicks (11-3), Callahan helped send the game into overtime, and finished with 13 saves.

Hutchinson was called upon to make just two stops to earn the victory.

Kemp led the Brewers with eight shots, four on goal, while sophomore Allison McManis (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) added four, and Demougeot chipped in with three.
