Women's Volleyball Splits Matches At Bomber Invitational

ITHACA, NY (September 5, 2006) -- The Vassar women's volleyball team split its opening season matches at the Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College on Friday night, falling 25-14, 25-17, 25-22 to Widener College in the first match and rebonding to defeat SUNY Brockport 25-21, 22-25, 26-24, 25-19 in the second match.

Vassar (1-1), will face SUNY Oneonta at 11:30 am on Saturday in the third of four matches at the Bomber Invitational. The fourth and final match will be against either SUNY Geneseo or Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

The Brewers came back against SUNY Brockport after dropping the season opening match to Widener. Juniors Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) and Caitlyn Ly (Chicago, IL/Clayton) led the way with 11 and eight kills respectively. Johsnon had seven digs and Lee had eight to go along with five aces.

Freshman Mary-Chris Arena (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 18 digs in her second collegiate match. She also had one service ace.

Against Widener College, Vassar was led by senior Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, NY/Holbrook) with 10 assists, 9 digs and 1 service ace. Freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Eastport Southmanor) made her collegiate debut with four kills and three blocks.

Following the Bomber Invitational, the Brewers will make their home opener on Wednesday, September 10 against Russell Sage College at 7:00 p.m.
