Volleyball Splits Final Two Games At MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 27, 2008) -- The Vassar women's volleyball team snapped its three game losing streak this morning with 3-1 victory over Bridgewater State in the Bronze Bracket at the MIT Invitational. In Vassar's final match at the Invitational, the Brewers fell to Bowdoin, 3-1.

Splitting its two two matches today leaves Vassar at 6-11 on the season. The Brewers will host Manhattanville and Mount St. Mary in a tri-match at Kenyon Hall on October 4 at Noon.

In the victory over Bridgewater State (18-25, 25-17, 25-22, 28-26), junior Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) led the way with 12 kills and nine digs. In an all-around performance, Johnson added three service aces, two block assists and a solo block.

Senior Katie Newton (Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara) chipped in with 11 kills and 12 digs. Classmate Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) had 27 assits, 12 digs and three block assists in one of her strongest games of the season.

In the final game of the Invitational against Bowdoin, a 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 23-25 loss, freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Eastport Southmanor) led the way with 11 kills, three block assists and two solo blocks. Johnson followed with nine kills and 13 digs. Junior Julianna Simon (Sandy, UT/Waterford School) had three kills, three block assists and one solo block. On the defensive end, freshman #Mary-Arena# (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had 15 digs and junior Jasmin Iskandar (San Dimas, CA/Vivian Webb) had nine digs.
