Volleyball Drops Pair At MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, MA (September 27, 2008) -- The Vassar women's volleyball team dropped its opening two matches at the MIT Invitational on Friday, falling to both Wellesley and Colby in straight sets. In the opener against Wellesley, the Brewers were defeated 25-16, 27-17, 25-20. In the late evening match against Colby, Vassar fell 25-21, 25-22, 28-26.

Vassar (5-10), will have two matches on Saturday against opponents yet to be determined following the completion of pool play.

Against Wellesley, sophomore Julianna Simon (Sandy, UT/Waterford School) led the way with nine kills without an error. She had one solo block and a block assist. Junior Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) had six kills.

The Brewers got a 20 assist, seven dig effort from senior Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North). Senior Katie Newton (Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara) led the squad with 12 digs. Freshman Mary-Chris Arena (Fairport, NY/Fairport) had nine digs and junior Jasmin Iskandar (San Dimas, CA/Vivian Webb) had eight digs. Freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Southmanor) had two kills, three block assists and a block solo.

In a tight match against Colby, Johnson led the way with 14 kills and 11 digs. Newton and Bavosa had nine and six kills respectively. Phan had another strong match with 29 assists and 10 digs. Arena added 16 digs.
