Lance Strikes Again, Leads Field Hockey Past WestConn, 2-1

DANBURY, CT (September 24, 2008) -- For the second consecutive year, Vassar field hockey forward Jessica Lance (Enfield, CT/Enfield) has scored the game winning goal against Western Connecticut State College. Last year, Lance notched the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the Colonials> On Wednesday evening, Lance tallied the game winner 16:32 into the second half for a 2-1 Brewers victory.

The win improved the Brewers to 3-4 heading into opening of Liberty League play this Friday against William Smith and Rochester on Saturday. The loss dropped WestConn to 1-6 on the season.

Lance's breakaway goal, her first of the season, came off a pinpoint feed from senior Emily Fare (Guilford, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall), who earned her fourth assist of the season.

Fare also figured in Vassar's first goal,assisting on a penalty corner tally scored by senior forward Jessie Albert (West Hartford, CT/William H. Hall) at the 30:13 mark of the first half. The play was initated by freshman Rebecca Backer (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), who recorded her first collegiate points.

It was the only penalty corner Vassar would take in the second half.

Senior Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) played the first half and earned her third victory of the season while making three saves. Sophomore Rachel Horwitz (Beverly Hills, CA/Harvard-Westlake) played the second half and made six saves while allowing the Colonials' Sara LeFevre to score her fourth goal of the season at the 68:46 mark.
