Volleyball Splits Matches At Liberty League Preview Tournament

LAKE PLACID, NY (September 20, 2008) -- Vassar's women's volleyball team split its two matches at the Liberty League Preview Tournament this afternoon, losing to Clarkson, 25-12, 25-18, 25-18 in the opening match, but showing great resolve in the fourth match of the competition, defeating St. Lawrence 25-23, 25-21, 22-25, 15-25, 15-13.

The Brewers (5-7) concluded the inaugural event with a five set victory over St. Lawrence, a team that handed Union its first loss of the season on Friday night.

Senior Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, NY Sachem North) set the tone for the victory with 30 assists and 18 digs. The Brewers were all over the court defensively, getting 23 digs from freshman Mary-Chris Arena (Fairport, NY/Fairport), 19 digs from senior Katie Newton (Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara) and 14 digs from freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Eastport Southmanor).

On the attack from, junior Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) had 14 kills, Bavosa added 11 and Newton chiped in with 10. Junior Sarah Potts (Bellevue, WA/Newport) have five kills without an attack error.

Against Clarkson, Potts led the way with five kills without an attack error. She also added two blocks. Katie Newton added 11 digs.

The Brewers are back in action on Wednesday with a road game against SUNY New Paltz at 7:00 pm.
