Volleyball Loses Tough Matches At Liberty Preview Tournament

LAKE PLACID, NY (September 19, 2008) – Playing in the inaugural Liberty League Preview Tournament at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, site of the 1980 winter Games, the Vassar women's volleyball team lost two tough matches against rivals Skidmore and Union on Friday evening. In the opening match against Skidmore the Brewers fell 25-22, 25-6, 25-22. In the late evening match, Vassar fought hard against Union, losing in four sets, 19-25, 25-17, 17-25 and 18-25.

At the first-year event, all five Liberty League schools are participating in the Preview Tournament, which serves as a prelude to the 2008 Championships that will be held at Union College on November 7-8.

The Brewers (4-6) will meet Clarkson at 1:00 p.m. and St. Lawrence at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

In their opening match against Skidmore, juniors Caitlyn Ly (Chicago, IL/Clayton) had seven kills and Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) had five kills. Senior Katie Newton (Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara)and junior Jasmin Iskandar (San Dimas, CA/Vivian Webb) had strong defensive games, earning 12 and 11 digs respectively. Sophomore Chelsea Mottern (Bound Brook, NJ/Rutgers Prep) had eight assists.

In the nightcap against Union, Ly led Vassar with 12 kills and Johnson chipped in with 8 kills. Newton continued her fine defensive play with 15 digs and Iskandar had 11 digs. Junior Sarah Potts (Bellevue, WA/Newport) had three blocks. Most notable, sophomore Yevgeniya Sergeyenko (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Technical) had a career high 17 assists.
