Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of Season to Stevens Institute

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 17, 2008) – Despite an evenly played second half, 15th ranked Stevens Institute of Technology was able to use a three-goal first half as it defeated the Vassar College men's soccer team, 3-0, handing the Brewers their first loss of the season Wednesday afternoon at Prentiss Field.

The Brewers move to 2-1 (0-0) on the season. They travel to Drew University on Saturday and host Medgar Evers on Sunday. The Ducks improve to 6-1 (0-0) and travel to Manhattanville College on Saturday.

Stevens got its first goal of the game from sophomore Bryan De Faria (Hillside, NJ/St. Benedicts) just over six minutes into the game off of an assist from junior Terrence Johnson (New Orleans, LA/Pemberton). Stevens controlled the ball for much of the next twenty minutes before striking again with 19 minutes to play in the first half. After a scramble in front of the goal, sophomore Nolan Sandberg (Round Lake Park, IL/Grayslak Central) gathered the ball just inside the 18-yard box and put a perfectly placed shot into the right corner of the net.

Stevens scored their third goal of the half just over three minutes later. After Sandberg was again making a run towards the goal, he was pushed down just outside the box for an indirect kick. Craig Moquin (Breinigsville, PA/Parkland) picked up an assist on the ensuing restart, as he rolled the ball to the right and allowed Peter Montalvo (Cranford, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) to pound a low, hard shot past the Vassar goalkeeper.

Vassar junior Alex Freund (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) nearly got the Brewers on board with 14 minutes to play in the half, as he beat a man in the right side of the box and had only the goalie to beat, but his shot from a difficult angle rolled left of the goal. Vassar picked up its offensive attack towards the end of the first half, but was not able to convert. Vassar goalkeeper Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) was tested often, gathering four first half saves.

The Brewers came out strong in the second half, keeping the ball on their offensive side of the field for the majority of the first 20 minutes and defending Stevens' speedy forwards. Just two minutes into the game, Johnson nearly had a goal when he sent a laser shot off the crossbar. Six minutes later, Vassar's second half goalkeeper Jake London (Albany, NY/Albany) came up big for the Brewers when Johnson got free on a through ball but was stopped by a sliding London. London, who had five saves on the day, stopped Johnson on another one-on-one with 19 minutes to play.

Vassar had its own offensive chances in the second half, but was not able to capitalize. With 23 minutes left, senior Matt Belli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) sent a shot just right of the goal. Daniel Griffith (Camp Lejeune, NC/Lejeune) came closest for the Brewers, striking a half-volley from 25 yards out that was just saved by Stevens goalkeeper Zach Carr (Carmel, IN/Carmel). Vassar tallied five shots in the second half.

Carr (6-1) finished with four saves in the game to pick up his sixth win of the season. Cetel (1-1) took the loss for the Brewers.

The Ducks outshot the Brewers, 21-9, with Johnson (six shots, four on goal) tallying most of the damage. Freund led the Brewers with four shots, three on goal.
