Slow Start Hurts Women's Hoops In Loss To Hamilton

Box Score

CLINTON, NY (February 9, 2008)-- Another slow start plagued Vassar's women's basketball team Saturday afternoon in Liberty League action against Hamilton College. The Brewers went down 43-13 at halftime against the Continentals and suffered a 67-38 loss to remain winless in league play. Vassar (4-13, 0-9) will look to snap a nine-game losing streak on Tuesday at the AFC against Brooklyn College at 7:00 pm. Hamilton improves to 12-7, 7-2.

The Brewers led only once, 3-2, following a 3-pointer by freshman Carolyn Crampton (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) and had a 7-5 deficit at 17:34 of the first half following a layup by sophomore Emily Haeuser (South Portland, ME/South Portland).

While the Brewers were able to remain within ten points midway through the half, leading 22-13, Hamilton went on a 21-0 run over the final 8:04 to put the game out of reach. Turnovers hurt the Vassar cause during this Hamilton spurt, as the Brewers commited seven, six of which happened in a five minute span.

Hamilton's lead grew to 51-15 with 16:40 to play before the Brewers were able to improve their offensive effort. As has become a ritual for Vassar, the Brewers outscored their opponent in the second half (25-24), but the deficit was too large to overcome.

Haeuser led the Brewers with 11 points. Sophomore Emma Carmichael (Brattleboro, VT/Brattleboro Union) had another strong rebounding game with 13, best on either team. Crampton added eight points and sophomore Ashley Sherman (Hewlett Harbor, NY/Lynbrook) had six.

Hamilton was paced by Sydney Fasulo with 13 points.
