Matt Nunn produced his career-best performance when it was needed the most. The junior from Lower Gwynnedd, PA tallied 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting from the field to keep Vassar's men's basketball team in the thick of four Liberty League playoff spots and past surging Union, 56-44, Saturday afternoon.
Senior guard
Tyson Brazell (Salt Lake City, UT/Waterford School) had 11 rebounds for Vassar, which improved to 16-5, 7-4 in the Liberty League. Union, which only last weekend defeated St. Lawrence and Clarkson, falls to 8-14 and 4-8 in the league. The victory pushes Vassar into a second place tie with Hamilton with identical 7-4 records.
Senior guard Jon Swartz (Nanuet, NY) had eight points and six rebounds for the Brewers, who had a 38-33 rebounding edge. Brazell added a game high three steals and
Joe Davis (East Amherst, NY) scored seven points with five boards for the guests.
Union featured a game and career high from freshman forward Ron Knox (Cross River, NY). Knox also had a career best seven boards. Drew Desmarais (St. James, NY) had 11 rebounds for the Dutchmen, all on the defensive end. Senior Kyle Grimm (Sherrill, NY) had nine points and six rebounds.
Vassar led 32-20 at halftime, after a 21-9 run in the final 10:53 of the first stanza. The Brewers shot 48 percent in the first half.
Union got as close as eight when Steve Madej (Burnt Hills, NY) made two free throws 3:36 into the second half to trim the Vassar lead to 35-27. But the Brewers took a 49-28 lead with a 14-1 run in the next 5:24. Nunn had five points and two rebounds during the run.
Knox got Union as close as 12 with 2:38 left with a three-pointer making it 56-44, but that proved to be the final scoring of the day. The Brewers shot 37 percent for the game while the Dutchmen shot 32 percent, and the visitors had 10 steals and forced 17 turnovers.
