Strong Union Defense Key Over Women's Hoops, 47-35

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 1, 2008) -- The Vassar College women's basketball team dropped its sixth straight Liberty League game to the Union Dutchwomen, 47-35, this Friday evening at the Athletics & Fitness Center. The Brewers failed to connect on their field goals, shooting just 21% on the game. Union junior Maria Tobin (Schenectady, NY/Bishop Maginn) had no such problems, as the guard hit 4 of 6 three-pointers and finished with a team-high 14 points.

Vassar is now 4-10 overall and 0-6 in Conference play. The Brewers will play Skidmore tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Union improves to 9-7 and reaches .500 in League play at 3-3. The Dutchwomen will travel to RPI tomorrow afternoon.

The Brewers were unable to put the ball in the basket in the first eight minutes of play, allowing Union to build a 7-0 lead. Vassar sophomore Ashley Sherman (Hewlett Harbor, NY/Lynbrook) finally sank a three-ball at the 12:16 mark to jumpstart the home team's offense. However, Union was able to establish a 26-14 lead by halftime. Senior forward Devon Ciliberto (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) scored 7 of her 9 points in the first ten minutes of play to lead Union's offensive charge.

In the second half, Vassar made a number of threats against the Union lead and ultimately tied their opponents in the period, 21-21. The Brewers were able to feed the ball into their standout sophomore forward, Emily Haueser (South Portland, ME/South Portland), who scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second period. But Union's balanced scoring attack and pressure defense, which picked off ten Vassar passes throughout the game, eventually held the Brewers at bay.

For Vassar, sophomore Emma Carmichael (Brattleboro, VT, Brattleboro Union) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and senior point guard Chelsea Katzenberg (Middlesex, VT/U-32) had 7 of her own to add to her 5 points.

For Union, Ciliberto and Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had 9 and 8 points, respectively. Both grabbed 8 rebounds.
