NEW PALTZ, NY (November 22, 2008) – With the Liberty League Swimming & Diving Championships two weeks away, the Vassar women's team tested itself against a deep and talented New Paltz team on Saturday afternoon. Despite a 111-88 loss to the Hawks, the Brewers got the type of performances from a variety of swimmers that will bode well when the team travels to RPI for the first of three major events on December 5.
Against New Paltz, the Brewers got three outstanding performances and a pair of personal best performances in the 1000 Yard Freestyle. Senior Charly Young (Pensacola, FL/Pensacola) swam to a third place finish, clocking in at 11:41.52. Sophomore
Ilene Goodman (Westfield, NJ/Westifeld) finished fourth in a personal best time of 11:48.88 and freshman
Amy Entwisle (Silver Springs, MD/Sidwell Friends School) with her personal best time of 12:16.48
In the 500 Free, both Goodman and Entwisle shined again, placing third and fourth respectively. Goodman finished her race in 5:49.30 and Entwisle was right behind at 5:53.68.
The 50 Free race was a highlight for the Brewers as junior
Jordana Jantze (Riverside, IL/Riverside Brookfield) finished second in 26:49. On her heels was senior
Jess Lentner (Florence, MA/Northampton) in 26:68.
The 100 Fly was another marquee event for Vassar as had a second place finish courtesy of sophomore
Meg McCarty (Wilton, CT/Wilton) with a 1:04.06 time and a nifty fourth place finish from Young (1:09.37). Setting a season best in that same race for Vassar was freshman
Felicia Hansell (Northfield, MN/Northfield) at 1:11.08.
“As a team, we came to the fore front today,” said head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee. “We swam well. New Paltz is strong and deep and it brought out some good races for our team. We're looking forward to competing in the Liberty League Championshis in two weeks.”
