Bavosa Earns All-Tournament At Vassar Invite

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 1, 2008) – Playing against two formidable teams in the second day of action in its annual tournament, Vassar's women's volleyball team fell to both Fredonia and Stevens in straight sets. Fredonia captured the morning match 11-25, 16-25, 24-26 and Stevens won the finale, 20-25, 13-25, 11-25. A bright spot for Vassar in the tournament was the play of freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Eastport Southmanor) who earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

The Brewers, now 11-19 on the season, will prepare for next weekend's Liberty League tournament that will be hosted by Union College.

Stevens Institute, with a perfect 4-0 record, captured the championship. New Paltz finished second at 3-1, followed by Fredonia at 2-2, Rochester at 1-3 and the Brewers at 0-4. Stevens placed four players on the All-Tournament Team, led by MVP Melanie Volk. Joining her were teammates Sarah Byrne, Jess Gardner and Melissa Rhode. New Paltz had three players selected, Brittany Coyle, Nicole Mercadante and Melinda DiGiovanna. Fredonia's Amy Bertrando and Kaitlin Erdmann earned honors. Rochester's representative was Katie Koa.

In its third round match, the Brewers got off to a slow start, then rebounded nicely in the third set, but dropped a 3-0 decision to Fredonia (11-25, 16-25, 24-26. Fredonia jumped out to an early lead in the first set, winning the first seven points of the day. It set the tone for wins in the first two sets, but the third set was competitive and down to the wire.

In the third set, the Brewers battled back from a 24-18 deficit to tie it late, with freshman Bavosa leading the charge. Bavosa recorded the kill to pull Vassar within five. Amy then served the next four points helping to pull the Brewers within one. After a Fredonia timeout, freshman Mary-Chris Arena (Fairport, NY/Fairport) took over at server and helping the Brewers to tie the game.

Bavosa and senior Katie Newton(Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara) had solid matches. Bavosa led the team with eight digs. She also contributed three kills, two of which were in the final game. Newton led the team with five kills, four in the third set, while also totaling seven digs in the effort. Sophomore Chelsea Mottern (Bound Brook, NJ/ Rutgers Prep) registered nine assists, and four digs in the match.
Fredonia was led by Chelsea Senn (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) will 11 kills and Amy Bertrando (Westfield, NY/Westfield) with 10 kills. Alyssas Torpy (West Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) had a match-high 27 assists.

In its final match against Stevens, the Brewers had the first set tied four times, the last being at 10-10. Vassar edged out ahead 14-11 on a kill by Newton, but the Ducks reeled off the next six straight points to take a 17-11 lead. Three consecutive Stevens miscues enabled the Brewers to close within 21-20, but Stevens got three straight kills from Volk (Thompson Station, TN/Father Ryan) to notch the opening set win.
