Brewers Cap Season with 3-2 Overtime Victory

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 1, 2008) – The Vassar College men's soccer team closed out its season on a high note, edging SUNY-Cortland 3-2 in overtime on Saturday at Gordon Field. In fitting fashion, the team's leading scorers hooked up to win the game, as junior Brian Bianchetti (Tustin, CA/Foothill) netted the game-winner on an assist from senior Jon Hootnick (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead).

The Brewers close out their season at .500, with an 8-8 record. The Red Dragons fall to 8-6-2, heading into SUNYAC postseason play against Oneonta on Tuesday.

Bianchetti netted the game-winner, his tenth goal of the season, in the 100th minute. With his back to the goal, Hootnick laid a ball off to Bianchetti at the right side of the net. The junior midfielder directed the ball past Red Dragon keeper Jack Carillo (Cornwall, NY/Ramapo) to give the Brewers an emotional win on Senior Day.

After 42 minutes of scoreless play to open the game, Vassar and Cortland combined to score four goals in a little over eight minutes, with three goals coming less than three minutes apart.

Entering the second half with a one-goal deficit, Hootnick quickly evened things up with an impressive shot in the 48th minute. With his back to the net, the senior forward settled a ball from about 20 yards out, and then turned and lofted a shot into the back of the goal to tie the game at one. It was Hootnick's ninth goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later, sophomore Ben Scaglione (Elizabethtown, NY/Elizabethtown Lewis) gave the Brewers the lead on an assist from Ross Macklin (Henniker, NH/John Stark Regional). The freshman midfielder weaved around the Cortland defense and laid a ball off to Scaglione who fired a low shot into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the year.

Vassar's lead was short-lived, however, as Cortland answered less than a minute later as senior Bryan Patterson (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) netted his second goal of the game, and his tenth of the season. Patterson received a ball over the top from Peter Degere (West Islip, NY/West Islip) and beat Brewer goalie Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) in a one-on-one.

Patterson got Cortland on board in the 43rd minute on an assist from E.J. Reutemann (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa). Reutemann tapped the ball to a charging Patterson who one-timed the ball into the back of the net.

Senior Cetel had an impressive showing in goal, recording 11 saves, including seven in the first half. In the second half, Cetel preserved the tie with some incredible saves on what looked to be definite Red Dragon goals. With less than two minutes to play, Cetel managed to grab the ball away from Patterson after the dangerous striker got free in the box. With the win, Cetel finished the season with a 4-2-0 record.

Carillo had six saves for Cortland, dropping to 2-2-1 in goal.

Seniors Hootnick, Cetel, Matt Belli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington), Kevin Goldberg (Houston, TX/Emery), Daniel Kadishson (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale), and Jimmy McCumber (Holliston, MA/Holliston) played in their final home game today.
