William Smith Knocks Brewers Out of Playoffs With 3-0 Shutout

Box Score

GENEVA, NY (October 26, 2008) The fifth-ranked William Smith College women's soccer team defeated Vassar College 3-0 on Sunday at William Smith Field, knocking Vassar out of the league playoffs.

The Brewers fall to 8-5-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in the league. The combination of Vassar's loss and Skidmore's win over St. Lawrence meant that the Brewers narrowly missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The Herons improve to 12-1-3 overall and 6-0-1 in the Liberty League, securing the regular season conference title.

Junior Megan Stevens (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) gave the Herons a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute of action, as she curved a corner kick into the far corner of the goal, just past senior Brewer goalkeeper Anne Hutchinson (Tampa Prep/St. Pete Beach, Fla.).

Less than three minutes later, sophomore forward Brelynn Nasypany (Herkimer/Herkimer, N.Y.) tallied on a direct kick from just outside the top left corner of the box. With the goal, Nasypany increased her Liberty League-leading total to 13.

Vassar sophomore midfielder Carolyn Demougeot (French International/Potomac, MD) threatened in the 66th minute. She freed herself from the Heron defense and took the ball in toward the goal, but William Smith's first-year goalie Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Succasunna, N.J.) came out to smother the ball before she could get the shot off.

First-year defender Jessie Tarantino (East Aurora/East Aurora, N.Y.) added an insurance goal in the last minute, following a free kick and a scramble in front of the goal.

The Herons out shot their visitors 9-0. Davis recorded her sixth shutout of the season, improving to 6-0-3 in net. Hutchinson finished with one save.

As the top seed, William Smith will host the Liberty League Tournament Nov. 7-8. The Herons will take on fourth-seeded St. Lawrence in the semifinal round on Friday.
