MADISON, NJ (October 20, 2008) -- Senior
Hannah Beswick (Wilmington, DE/Wilmington Friends) notched her second goal of the season to draw the Vassar field hockey team within one goal of Drew University, but the host Rangers got the all-important insurance goal and defeated the Brewers, 3-1, in a non-conference game at Ranger Stadium on Monday evening.
The loss leaves the Brewers at 3-11 and in the midst of a seven game losing streak. The final home weekend of the season takes place this Saturday, October 25 at 3:00 pm as Vassar hosts Union in Liberty League play. Sunday's Senior Day contest against Skidmore begins at 1:00 pm. The Brewers will play one final road game, at Scranton on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 pm.
Drew senior Lauren Collini scored a pair of goals, one in each half, to provide the Rangers with a 2-0 lead. Beswick's goal cut the margin to 2-1, one minute following Collini's goal but Drew's junior Elizabeth Law added the third on a penalty stroke for the 3-1 victory that evened the hosts record at 8-8 on the season.
The Rangers took a 1-0 lead at the 15 minute mark of the first half. After a scramble in the box, the ball was cleared out by a Vassar defender. However, Drew's Anna Aulgur was in position to intercept the ball and tossed it back into the mix to Law, who fed Collini following a deflection. Collini subsequently chipped it past Vassar senior goalie
Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) for the game's first goal. Herman made six saves in the game while playing the entire 70 minutes.
Herman made several strong saves as the close of the first half to keep the contest 1-0 at intermission. Six of Drew's 15 shots came in the opening half.
At the 37th minute, just two minutes into the second half, the Rangers struck. Collini tallied her second goal, but the 2-0 lead was short lived thanks to Beswick.
Vassar's goal, at the 38th minute, followed a restart of an infraction just outside of the circle. Senior
Jessie Albert (West Hartford, CT/William H. Hall) found Beswick in the circle, who carried the ball to the endline before sliding her shot past Drew goalie Lauren Fasano. Beswick had two of Vassar's three shots on goal.
Drew took a 3-1 lead in the 53rd minute after Law, who had two of her shots on goal sail wide in the span of 20 seconds, scored on a penalty stroke.
