MILTON, NY (September 6, 2007) -- The University of Scranton notched three first half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Vassar's women's field hockey team in the season opener for the Brewers.
Vassar will next host the 19th annual Betty Richey Tournament this Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's 11:00 am game against Elms College will be played at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, NY. Defending champion Kings meets MIT in the second game at 1:00 pm. Sunday's consolation and championship games will be played at SUNY New Paltz starting at 10:00 am.
Scranton (1-1) monopolized the offensive part of the game, out-shooting the Brewers 13-4 on the game. Scranton had 11 corners compared to Vassar's four.
Scranton freshman midfielder Corrie Szapka (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) notched two goals at 11:17 and 27:24. An insurance goal coming off a corner by freshman back Beth McLaughlin (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex South)with 3:50 to play in the first half bolstered Scranton's lead to 3-0.

Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackley School) started in nets for Vassar and had two saves. Junior
Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) played the second half and had six saves.
