Fox Header Lifts Men's Soccer Past Mount St. Mary, 2-1

Box Score

By Chelsea Katzenberg

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 17, 2007) -- With some last-minute heroics, Vassar senior Ben Fox (Dublin, NH/ConVal) ensured Vassar's men's soccer team would remain undefeated, as he netted the game-winning goal with 45 seconds to play, in a 2-1 victory over Mt. St. Mary's on Monday at Prentiss Field.

The winning goal was set up when junior Matthew Belli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) sent a corner kick into the box. A touch off the head of sophomore Guthrie Raimondo (Quogue, NY/Westhampton Beach) sent the ball over to Fox, who powered through the crowd to send a diving header past Knights goalkeeper Kyle Reiss (Oxford, NY/Oxford Academy). It was Fox's second game-winning header of the season, as he also played the hero in a 2-1 victory over Manhattanville in the Brewers' season opener.

On the season, the Brewers remain undefeated at 4-0, with all four wins coming by one-goal margins. This is the first time since the 2003 season that Vassar has started the season 4-0. The Brewers begin Liberty League play on the road this weekend, facing Clarkson on Friday and St. Lawrence on Saturday. Mt. St. Mary drops to 2-3 and travels to St. Joseph's College on Friday.

Vassar scored first in the 39th minute on an unassisted goal by Belli. After stealing the ball from a Knight defender, Belli turned and unleashed a shot from 35 yards out that sailed over Reiss' head.

Though the Knights had few offensive opportunities, they managed to tie the score with just four minutes to play, changing the tenor of the game. Junior Francis Amarteifio (Accra, Ghana/Achimota School) served a long ball into the box from the corner and Jon Gasiewski (New Milford, CT/New Milford) headed a shot into the upper netting. Fox, however, took the air out of any Mt. St. Mary momentum with his last-minute goal.

The Brewers controlled possession throughout the game, out-shooting the Knights 27-6 and forcing 13 corner kicks, while Mt. St. Mary managed just three. Despite the strong offensive pressure, many of Vassar's shots ended up in Reiss' hands. The senior goalie had 11 saves in the game.

Alex Freund (Chicago, IL/Francis Parker) led the Brewers with six shots. Fox, Sizwe Mdluli (Mbabane, Swaziland/Waterfod Kamhlaba), Daniel Griffith (Camp Lejeune, NC/Camp Lejeune) and Jon Hootnick (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) played a large role in keeping the Knight defense busy.

Junior Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) picked up his second win of the season, recording two saves.
