SOUTH HADLEY, MA (September 16, 2007) -- After being shutout in their opening game of the Seven Sisters Field Hockey Tournament, Vassar rebounded on Sunday afternoon with a shutout its their own, blanking Smith College 5-0 behind a pair of goals from seniors
Katherine Simon and
Catherine Twardy. Two Vassar players, senior
Chrissy Lewis (Leesburg, VA) and junior
Emily Fare (Guilford, CT) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their outstanding play in the two-day event.
With the victory, Vassar (2-3) inched closer to the .500 mark and now readies for the opening of the Liberty League season next weekend with games at Union and Skidmore on Friday and Saturday.
The goalie tandem of junior
Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ) and
Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY) shared duties in posting the shutout. Herman made four saves in the first half, Pomerantz had three in the second.
Simon (Waukesha, WI) got the Brewers on the board 6:15 into the game, off an assist from Twardy (Sherborn, MA). Twardy answered four minutes later with an unassisted goal and freshman
Jessica Lance (Enfield, CT) scored her third goal of the season with 1:50 to play until intermission.
Roughly 13 minutes into the second half, Twardy scored her second unassisted goal to increase Vassar's lead to 4-0. Simon closed out the games scoring with 15 minutes to play, after connecting following an assist from freshman
Madeline Rooney (Amherst, MA), who was playing not far from her hometown.
Smith's Courtney Murphy played all 70 minutes in net and made four saves on the afternoon in facing nine Vassar shots.
