SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (November 3, 2007) -- Junior John Alaimo captured three events the 200 Yard Freestyle, the 100 Yard Butterfly and the 200 Yard IM -- to lead Vassar's men's swimming and diving team to a 159-107 victory over Skidmore at Saratoga Springs. The Brewers had a double winner in fellow junior Tom Liu in the 100 Yard Breaststroke and 200 Yard Breaststroke and swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with Aaron Leftkowtiz and former Poughkeepsie Day School star Roo Wood. The Brewers started the day with a resounding 1-2 finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of Alistair Hall (Montreal, Canada/West Morris Mendham), Jeremy Shiman (Brookline, MA/Brookline), John Alaimo (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee), and Tom Liu (Staten Island, NY/ Curtis) took first with their 1:47.58 effort, while Dan Pierson (Haddonfield, NJ/ St. Joseph's Prep), Charlie Kuder (Canton, OH/ Central Catholic), Lars LaPann-Johannessen (Landisville, PA/ Hempfield), and Joe Zaino (Dobbs Ferry, NY/ Dobbs Ferry) out swam the Skidmore A team for a second place 1:54.44.
Vassar competed very well in the individual events as well, capturing victories in 10 of the 14 events. Garnering first-place accolades on the day were John Alaimo (100 yard fly, 56.90), Jeremy Shiman (100 yard back, 1:00.17), and Tom Liu (100 yard breast, 1:05.23). Teammates Dan Pierson (2nd, 200 yard fly, 2:34.65) and Lars LaPann-Johannessen (4th, 100 yard free, 56.51) added much needed depth points.
Showing signficant improvement since last season, Andrew Yau (Bangor, ME/Bangor) also contributed significant depth points with his 2nd in the 1000 yd. free (12:11.82) and 5th in the 500 yd. free (5:49.47).
Divers Roo Wood (Poughkeepsie, NY/Poughkeepsie Day) (1st, 1-meter,
160.65 points; 2nd, 3-meter, 157.35 points) and Aaron Lefkowitz (Sharon, MA/ Alldredge Academy) (1st, 3-meter, 167.75 points; 2nd, 1-meter 160.65 points) added 26 diving points in what proved to be Lefkowitz's first college victory.
Competing in their first dual meet for Vassar, Alistair Hall (1st, 500 yard free, 5:30.43), Joe Zaino (2nd, 200 back, 2:21.98), and Charlie Kuder (3rd, 100 yard breast, 1:10.24) all made huge contributions to the team's performance.
"Today was a solid team performance," said head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee. "If we didn't take 1st in an event, we were vying for 2nd and 3rd to make up the difference. We stepped up to the challenge and came up with a big victory."
