NEW PALTZ, NY (October 5, 2007) -- Behind a tenacious defense and an opportunistic offense, St. Lawrence's women's field hockey team blanked Vassar, 2-0, this afternoon in a Liberty League played at SUNY New Paltz. After a scoreless first half, the Saints tallied two second half goals en route to the victory.
St. Lawrence got on the board 13 minutes later when Julia Kiernan (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) stuck home a shot that bounced off Herman's pad following a scrum in front of the net.
The loss drops Vassar to 2-8, 0-4, while St. Lawrence improves to 7-2, 2-2. Vassar hosts Hamilton on Saturday at 2:00 pm, while St. Lawrence travels Rensselaer for a 4:00 pm game.
In a game primarily played in the Vassar half of the field, St. Lawrence had 18 shots compared to Vassar's one -- nine in each half. Vassar was resilient in the first 35 minutes, adeptly stopping several St. Lawrence attacks, but the Saints remained relentless and finally got on the board in the second half.
Oddly enough, St. Lawrence's first goal came on a penalty shot after Vassar goalie
Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) was called for covering up the ball following a shot by the Saints Lydia Gibson. Jennifer Stetson (Bristol, VT/Mt. Abraham) took the penalty shot, and lifted it over Herman's head for the games first goal 46:40 into the contest. Herman, who played the second half for starting Vassar goalie
Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackey School) had three saves. Pomerantz made five in the first half.
St. Lawrence got its second goal 13 minutes later when Julia Kiernan (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) slipped a goal off Herman's past following a scrum in front of the goal.
Saints goalie Lindsey Taylor earned the victory, having to make just one save on the afternoon. It was a dandy, however, off a blistering shot by Vassar's
Chrissy Lewis (Leesburg, VA/Lawrenceville School).
St. Lawrence held a commanding 13-3 advantage on penalty corners.
