TROY, NY (October 13, 2007) -- RPI received two goals from Gary Sroka and its defense combined clamp down on Vassar's offense, en route to registering a 3-0 Liberty League victory over the Brewers Saturday afternoon at Harkness Field.
The game matched two teams that came into contest with identical Liberty League records (1-2-1) in the race for one of four playoff spots. The loss drops Vassar to 6-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the Liberty League, and dropped the Brewers into sixth place with two league games remaining next Saturday and Sunday against Union and Skidmore. RPI improved its record to 6-4-3, 2-2-1 and into a tie with Hamilton for the fourth spot.
Next Saturday, October 20, prior to its 2:00 pm against Union College, Vassar will honor Staff Sgt. Robb L. Rolfing, 29, Vassar '00. Rolfing was a star player on the men's soccer team who died Saturday, June 30, in Baghdad. Rolfing was assigned as a special forces engineer to Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), in Fort Carson, Colo. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed from enemy small-arms fire.
A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Rolfing was a Physics & Astronomy major at Vassar. He finished his collegiate men's soccer career as the second all-time goal scorer (42 goals) along with 14 assists. He concluded his career as Vassar's second all-time points leader with 98 points.
For RPI, Sroka scored the games first and second goals at the 18th and 66th minute. The Red Hawks added an insurance goal in the 70th minute from Benjamin Poser.
Jason Cetel (Cherry East, NJ) had eight saves for Vassar in goal.
