Late Goal By Lance Leads Field Hockey Past WestConn, 1-0

MILTON, NY (October 10, 2007) -- Vassar freshman Jessica Lance (Enfield, CT/Enfield) broke a scoreless game with five minutes to play, leading the Brewers to a 1-0 victory over Western Connecticut in a non-conference women's field hockey game played at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome in Milton, NY. The loss breaks a six-game losing streak for the Brewers.

With the victory, Vassar improves to 3-9 on the season, while Western Connecticut drops to 4-8. Vassar next resumes Liberty League play on Friday, October 19 with a road game against William Smith. The Colonials next face Bridgewater State at home this Saturday, October 14.

The winning goal was orchestrated by sophomore Jordan Friedmann (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) who eluded three defenders en route to passing the ball to Lance. The freshman adeptly slid the ball past Sandra Vermeulen (Riverdale, NJ/Pompton Lakes), who replaced starting goalie freshman Christina Natale (Farmington, CT/Farmington) in the second half. Vermeulen made four second half saves for Western Connecticut.

Vassar had a golden scoring opportunity to get on the board first, four minutes into the second half when senior Chrissy Lewis (Leesburg, VA/Lawrenceville School) rifled a shot that was masterfully stopped by Vermeulen. The ball rebounded off her pads and into the stick of Vassar's Emily Fare who fired another shot that was again saved. The game remained scoreless until Lance notched the winning goal.

Vassar controlled both halves, particularly the first, playing most of it in the Western Connecticut half of the field. The Brewers banged out 10 shots against Natale and 17 for the game. Natale was equal to the task, making seven saves in the first half before being replaced by Vermeulen.

The Colonials managed only one shot for the game, coming in the first half against Vassar freshman goalie Rachel Horwitz (Beverly Hills/Harvard-Westlake), a replacement for starting goalie Ellie Pomerantz (Hartsdale, NY/The Hackley School).

Junior Taylor Herman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) played the second half in net and earned the victory, her second of the season.

For the game, Vassar had 12 penalty corners. Western Connecticut had none.
