Men's Fencing Finishes Program-Best Third At New England Championships

Senior captain John Rothman finished fourth in the sabre.

MOUNT HOLYOKE, MA (February 21, 2010) – Led by sophomore Nick Johnson, who earned the title of 2010 NEIFC Champion in the epee, the Vassar men's fencing team had its best overall performance for a second year running at New England Championships at Mount Holyoke College. The Brewers finished third out of 13 teams, repeating their epee squad win from last year and adding a sabre squad second place finish, just out of first by indicators. Junior Andrew Fischl finished second in the Sabre and senior captain John Rothman was fourth in that same weapon. Full results are posted at this link:

The Brewers will next compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Brown on Sunday, March 14, 2010.

Team Results:

  • Vassar Men's Team: 3rd Overall, best finish in school history

Individual Results:

  • Sophomore Nick Johnson – NEIFC New England Champion – Men's Epee
  • Junior Dennis D'Urso - 11th place Individual Sabre (was undefeated in the preliminary “C” pool)
  • Junior Brian Rouse substituted in for the last two bouts of the team round and won both to help cement the Epee squad victory.
