No. 17 Women's Squash Edged In Close 6-3 Match to No. 13 Middlebury

At No. 6 sophomore Meg Taylor won her fourth straight match, 14-12, 11-9, 11-7

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 30, 2010) – In a match that could have gone either way, the No. 17 Vassar College women's squash team dropped a close 6-3 decision to No. 13 Middlebury College on Saturday at Kenyon Hall.

The Brewers fall to 5-4 and host the Seven Sisters Squash Championship next weekend. Vassar will look to upend No. 11 Mount Holyoke, which has defeated the Brewers in the championship match in the last three seasons. Other teams competing are Smith College and Wellesley College. The Panthers improve to 15-3.

Vassar got wins from senior No. 1 Emilie Kraft, sophomore No. 6 Meg Taylor, and freshman No. 7 Alexa Lichtenstein. For Taylor, the Liberty League Performer of the Week, and Lichtenstein, the Rookie of the Week, Saturday's win represented their fourth straight as both players improved to 8-1 on the season. In three tightly contested games, Taylor picked up an impressive 14-12, 11-9, 11-7 victory, while Lichtenstein went to five games for her win, in a 2-11, 13-11, 4-11, 11-5, 11-8 match.

Kraft showed resilience in her match, holding tough for a 20-18 second game victory in an 11-7, 20-18, 11-6 win. At No. 4, freshman Libby Pei started off strong, taking an early 2-1 lead against her Middlebury opponent, but eventually fell in five sets, 11-6, 7-11, 9-11, 11-1, 11-4.
