Led by Kraft, Women's Squash Rakes in Liberty League Awards

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 18, 2009) – Following a successful 2008-09 season in which the Vassar College women's squash team won its most matches in four seasons and claimed its first-ever Liberty League Championship, the Brewers dominated the end-of-the-season league awards. Junior Emilie Kraft (Seattle, WA/Seattle Academy) became a two-time Player of the Year while the team of head coach Jane Parker and assistant coach Phil Wilkins earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors, also for the second consecutive season. Along with Kraft, three other Brewers earned First Team recognition, with two more receiving Honorable Mention.

Joining Kraft on the First Team were sophomore Kristine Bell (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception), junior Caitlyn Ly (Tucson, AZ/Clayton), and senior Eleanor Weiss (Millwood, VA/Holton-Arms). Earning Honorable Mention were junior Hope Blinkoff (Buffalo, NY/Nichols) and freshman Margaret Taylor (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury).

Coaching Staff of the Year: Head Coach Jane Parker, Assistant Coach Phil Wilkins

Parker and Wilkins led Vassar to the program's first-ever Liberty League Championship on the Brewers' home court. Vassar finished 11-8 and went 5-2 in the final seven games, including a sweep of its own Vassar Challenge.

Player of the Year: Emilie Kraft

The 2008 Player of the Year had a strong junior season, going 16-6 at the No. 1 spot for Vassar (11-8). Kraft represented Vassar at the CSA Individual Championships where she went 1-2 against top national competition. Kraft was named Performer of the Week seven out of eight possible weeks during the season.

First Team: Eleanor Weiss, Kristine Bell, Caitlyn Ly
A 2008 All-League First Team and 2006 All-League Honorable Mention, Weiss went 10-9 her senior season, working her way into the No. 2 spot in the second half of the season. Bell missed last season due to illness, but made an immediate impact for Vassar this year, with an 11-6 record at the No. 2 and 3 spot. Ly, a 2008 All-League First Team member, was 10-9 at the No. 5 spot for Vassar, including the decisive win as Vassar edged Columbia 5-4 to sweep its own Vassar Challenge.

Honorable Mention: Hope Blinkoff, Margaret Taylor

Blinkoff was 7-10 for the Brewers in the No. 4 spot while Taylor went 11-8 in the No. 6 spot for Vassar, finishing the season strong with six consecutive victories. Taylor was named Rookie of the Week three times.
