POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 20, 2017) — Nine Vassar College student-athletes were honored by the Liberty League for their performances this past week, as announced by the conference on Monday.
For lacrosse,
Tessa Waters was tabbed Rookie of the Week, while
Storm Sideleau and
Liam Moriarty were named to the Honor Roll
For tennis,
Nick Litsky was named Singles Performer of the Week and Doubles Team of the Week alongside teammate
Nick Zuczek;
Morgane Flournoy and
Kate Christensen were tabbed Doubles Team of the Week; and
Shayna Becker earned an Honor Roll nod.
Baseball player
Adam Erkis also earned an Honor Roll nod for his performances this past week.
Waters continues to tear through her freshman campaign, registering eight points on six goals and two assists to go along with seven ground balls, two created turnovers and four draw controls in Vassar's 2-0 week. In VC's 19-8 win over the University of New England, Waters chalked up a game-high five points on four goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls, one created turnover and three draw controls. Waters scored back-to-back goals as part of a 7-1 run that opened the game. She also assisted on the final goal of the first half to give the Brewers an 8-5 lead going into intermission. Waters continued to find the back of the net in the second half, sparking and fueling an 8-0 run to end the game with a pair of scores. In VC's 14-2 win over Fitchburg State, Waters led the offense with three points on two goals and an assist to go along with three ground balls, two created turnovers and a pair of draw controls. She scored amid a 3-0 run that opened the game before fueling a 9-0 burst with an assist to
Storm Sideleau, 6-1, and a woman-up goal from
Fiona MacLeod, 7-1. Through four games, Waters is second on the team with 11 points on nine goals and two assists.
Sideleau was productive across the board in Vassar's 2-0 week, totaling eight points on six goals and two assists to go along with three ground balls, two created turnovers and five draw controls. In VC's 19-8 win over the University of New England on Tuesday, Sideleau exploded in the second half, notching a hat trick over a 2:50 span to push the Brewer lead to 11-6. Her hot hand continued down the stretch, dishing out a pair of assists over a 2:56 span to help push the Brewer lead to 16-8. In VC's 14-2 win over Fitchburg State on Thursday, Sideleau sparked a 9-0 run with an unassisted score about midway through the first half, 4-1. She fueled the surge with another score, 6-1, before netting the final goal of the game with about a minute remaining, 14-2. Through four games, Sideleau leads the Brewers with 13 points on 11 goals and two assists.
Moriarty continues to orchestrate the Brewer offense, registering seven points on a goal and seven assists during Vassar's 1-1 week. The senior middie also added three ground balls and a created turnover. In VC's 12-3 win over Salve Regina on Friday, Moriarty tied his career-high with six points on a goal and five assists. He was essential to the Brewers' speedy start, accounting for the first three VC goals. He found
Brandon DeStasio for the first goal before scoring the second himself and feeding
James Thomas for the third. Moriarty later exploded in the fourth quarter with three straight helpers, finding Thomas for a man-up score and
Michael Mullen for a pair of goals, one of which was also man-up, 10-3. Through six games, Moriarty leads the team with 19 points on six goals and 13 assists.
Litsky had a standout week during Spring Break, as he won five of his six matches, helping Vassar to an upset of #31 Trinity. He has won his last four matches, earning victories over Whittier College, the College of Wooster and Chapman University, all at No. 1 in straight sets. He finished the week with a three-set win over Ruthwick Pathireddy of Caltech.
Litsky and Zuczek teamed together for the final three matches in doubles at No. 3, and had no issues at all, losing just six sets over the three matches to earn victories in all three. The pair of Nicks knocked off pairs from the College of Wooster, Chapman University and Caltech.
Christensen and Flournoy combined to go a perfect 4-0 on the week, while only losing three games in four matches. In fact, the duo won their last three at No. 2 doubles 8-0. The pair started the week with an 8-3 win over No. 37 Hardin Simmons, and then started the stretch of sweeps with an 8-0 win over Whittier College. Flournoy and Christensen followed that up with an 8-0 win over Nicole Fouts and Raven Hampton of Chapman and another sweep against Principia's Hallie Jones and Gracie Buchanan.
Becker completed a strong 4-0 week in singles, as she led the Brewers to four straight team victories, including helping Vassar to a win over then-#37 Hardin Simmons. Becker started the week with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Jenna Smith of HSU, and followed that with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Whittier College. She would then pick up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Nicole Fouts of Chapman University, and finished the week with a 0,0 win over Gracie Buchanan of Principia. All of her wins came at No. 2.
Erkis has been great for the Brewers this season, and continued that with a pair of relief outings. He finished the week with a 1.04 ERA over 8.2 innings of work, allowing just four hits while fanning seven batters and allowing just one total run. Erkis went three innings and allowed just one hit while striking out four against Cairn University, and then allowed only three hits and one run over 5.2 innings against NYU. Erkis has now pitched in all three wins for Vassar this year.
