Men's Tennis Sweeps And Nick Honored Again On Weekly Awards

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 13, 2017) -- The Vassar College men's tennis team swept the Liberty League Performers of the Week list Monday afternoon, and freshman women's hoopster Sophie Nick racked up yet another Rookie of the Week honor to highlight the release from the conference office.

Senior Juan Felipe Laso was tabbed as the Singles Performer of the Week, while Nick Litsky and Alexander Luckmann took down Doubles Team of the Week accolades. Freshman Jeremy Auh earned his first career Rookie of the Week accolade for men's tennis, and Nick collected her eighth of the season for her play last week. Junior Ariella Rosenthal and sophomore Alex Seff each were listed on the Honor Roll.

Laso helped Vassar to an 8-1 win to the start the spring portion of its season, knocking off Clark University on Saturday evening in Worcester, MA. Laso teamed at No. 3 doubles with sophomore Jamie Anderson to earn an 8-3 win. He then followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of Lenny Siegel at No. 4.

The pairing of Litsky and Luckmann had a strong showing in their only match of the weekend, taking down the No. 1 pairing of Clark University 8-5 in the opening match of the 2017 portion of the season. Auh started the spring session in style on Saturday evening, as he was a double winner in Vassar's 8-1 win over Clark University. Auh teamed with sophomore Nick Zuczek at No. 2 to pick up an easy 8-3 win, and then turned around and cruised to an 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, as the match was limited to one set due to time constraints.

Nick won her eighth weekly award on Monday, and her seventh in the past eight weeks after totaling 30 points on 56 percent shooting, including a game-winning buzzer-beating layup, 19 rebounds and four assists in a 1-1 weekend. Against St. Lawrence on Friday, Nick capped her 16-point performance with a career highlight, laying in the buzzer-beating basket for Vassar to escape with a 72-70 win. Through 23 games, Nick leads the team in rebounds (8.6rpg) and blocks (14), also averaging 12.4 points per game.

Alex Seff averaged 22 points, shooting 61 percent from the floor and 63 percent (5-of-8) from distance, to help Vassar to a 1-1 week. Against St. Lawrence on Friday, Seff helped Vassar get ahead early, fueling a 9-0 run with a layup and a triple. After the Brewers fell behind by as many as 15, Seff made it a one-possession game down the stretch with a jumper. The next day against Clarkson, Seff notched his third double-double of the season with 28 points and 10 boards to help Vassar to a 78-76 win. Seff and teammate Jesse Browne combined to score the final 16 points of the first half for the Brewers, as they carried a 42-30 edge into the break. In the second half, Seff gave Vassar its final double-digit lead of the game by scoring six straight points for the Brewers, 63-53. Through 22 games, Seff leads the team with 16.1 points per game and 30 total steals, adding 5.1 boards and 2.3 assists per game as well.
