Five Brewers Land On Liberty League Weekly Release

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 23, 2017) — Sophie Nick of the Vassar College women's basketball team was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the sixth time this season, Julia Cunningham was tabbed the Swimmer of the Week for the third time this season, and three other Brewers were pegged to the Honor Roll, as announced by the conference Monday afternoon.
 
Basketball players Alex Seff and Ariella Rosenthal, along with squash player Vincent Mencotti, earned Honor Roll nods for their performances this past week.
 
Nick continues to tear through her freshman campaign, totaling 13 points, five rebounds and two steals in Vassar's 71-64 win over RPI on Tuesday. Nick gave the Brewers the lead for good with a three-pointer early in the fourth quarter. Through 17 games, Nick is first on the team with 8.5 rebounds per game and 13 total blocks, second on the team with 12.1 points per game and fourth on the team with 16 total steals.
 
Cunningham had a banner weekend for the Brewers, as she won all four individual events she entered, while helping the Brewers to a third-place finish at the Seven Sisters Championships. Cunningham won the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.20, and followed that with a 400 IM win with a season-best time of 4:34.45. She then took the 100 butterfly minutes later, winning by over three seconds with a 58.04. In day two, she earned the win in the 200 butterfly with a "B" cut time of 2:05.95. She would later help VC to a second-place finish in the 400 free relay to finish the Seven Sisters Championships. She was also named as the Marly Pineda Award Winner, given to a Seven Sisters senior that best best exemplifies the dedication, passion, selflessness, sportsmanship, and spirit of a champion that defined Marly. Each honoree will also be known for her positive attitude, commitment toward making everyone around her feel welcomed and supported, and her "never ever" give up spirit.
 
Seff led the Brewers in points (15), rebounds (8) and assists (3) in Vassar's only game last week. Attempting to spark the offense against RPI, Seff scored two of the first three VC field goals in the first half before hitting the first two VC fields goals to start the second. Through 16 games, Seff leads the Brewers with 14.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game, adding 2.4 assists per game, 18 steals and three blocks. 
 
Rosenthal registered her second straight double-double, totaling a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds to guide Vassar to a 71-64 victory over RPI on Tuesday. The junior guard also aded an assist, a block and two steals to help the Brewers to their fourth straight win. After the Brewers fell behind early, Rosenthal fueled a 14-3 run to help close the gap to as little as three, 27-24, in the first half. The Brewers stormed back over the third and fourth quarters to eventually take the lead. Rosenthal all-but-iced the game, knocking down four straight free throws to make it a three-possession ballgame with 57 seconds remaining, 62-53. Through 17 games, Rosenthal is first on the team with 15.2 points per game and second on the team with 7.1 assists per game and 20 total steals. 
 
Mencotti starred at the top of the lineup, going 2-0 on the day for his fifth and sixth straight win. Mencotti defeated Davy Qi of Swarthmore in three sets, 11-1, 11-1, 11-5, before topping Tate Miller of Haverford in five, hard-fought sets, 12-10, 9-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-5. Through 10 matches, Mencotti paces the Brewers with an 8-2 record at the one.
