Men's Soccer Highlights Liberty League Weekly Awards

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 12, 2016) — The Liberty League released its weekly Performer of the Week awards Monday afternoon, and eight Vassar College student-athletes earned honors for their performances this past week.

From the men's soccer team, midfielder Hayden Van Brewer was named Offensive Performer of the Week, Tyler Gilmore was tabbed Defensive Performer of the Week and Mattie Mrlik was pegged Rookie of the Week.

Women's tennis player Kate Christensen was declared Singles Performer of the Week, while volleyball player Jane McLeod and cross country runner Caroline Hartman were chosen Rookies of the Week. Additionally, field hockey player Emma Bracken and volleyball player Annie MacMillan earned spots on the Honor Roll.

Hayden Van Brewer collected at least a point in every game during Vassar's 3-0 week, dishing out the equalizer and game-winner in Vassar's 2-1 win over Manhattanville (Sept. 6), lending a help in Vassar's 2-0 victory over William Paterson University (Sept. 10) and tallying an assist in Vassar's 7-0 trouncing of Elms College (Sept. 11). Against Manhattanville, Van Brewer bent a cross from the right to Tyler Gilmore, who headed in the goal from close range to level the game at 1-all in the second half. Then with 19 seconds remaining, Van Brewer lofted a corner kick for Gilmore to notch the game-winner with another header. Against William Paterson, Van Brewer padded the Brewer lead in the second half, lofting a pass into the box for Mattie Mrlik to tap in a goal from close range, 2-0. Against Elms, Van Brewer helped push the lead to 4-0 on another corner kick. His shot found Alex Gonzales, whose head pass allowed Tanner Sands to slot it into the left side of the net. Van Brewer leads the team in assists with four on the young season.

Tyler Gilmore had a career outing against Manhattanville, scoring the equalizer and last-second game-winner in Vassar's 2-1 win (Sept. 6).  The Valiants went ahead 1-0 in the 59th minute, but Gilmore was able to thrive in crunch time. In the 84th minute, Hayden Van Brewer bent a cross from the right to Gilmore, who headed in a goal from close range to level the match at 1-all. Then, with 19 seconds remaining, Gilmore capitalized on a Van Brewer corner kick, slotting the game-winner into the right corner with another header. Gilmore also bolstered a Brewer defense that posted two shutouts in Vassar's 3-0 week.

Mattie Mrlik continues to be a force for the Brewer offense, logging six points in Vassar's 3-0 week. In a 2-0 shutout over William Paterson (Sept. 10), the freshman assisted on the game-winner, which was scored by Mitch Davis, before finding the back of the net himself, thanks to a help from Hayden Van Brewer. On the latter goal, Van Brewer lofted a pass into the box for Mrlik to tap it in from the six. In a 7-0 win over Elms, Mrlik assisted on the first goal of the second half before creating his own shot in the 71st minute. The freshman dribbled down the right side, split his defenders and slotted his shot into the left side of the net from a difficult angle. After his performance during the inaugural Vassar College Classic, Mrlik was tabbed the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The first-year forward leads the undefeated, 5-0 squad with nine points (three goals, three assists) on the year.
