POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 17, 2016) -- Freshman
Adin Becker added another Liberty League Rookie of the Week honor to his collection Monday, as the conference office announced the weekly award winners with a release this afternoon.
Becker has now won the award three times, as he also was the Rookie of the Week back on September 19 and October 3. Becker was the top Liberty League freshman finisher and the fourth overall freshman at the 2016 Rowan University Border Clash, made up of 43 teams. Becker finished 55th overall out of nearly 400 runners, running a time of 24:40.0 while averaging a
5:06 mile.
VC also had four Honor Roll student-athletes Monday as well, as
Emily Poehlein from field hockey,
Alex Gonzales of men's soccer, women's soccer forward
Rebecca Andrews and sophomore women's volleyball star
Devan Gallagher picked up the mention.
Poehlein scored the game-winning goal, her fourth tally of the season, as the Brewers knocked off No. 11 Skidmore College 2-1
Saturday afternoon. Poehlein scored in the 47th minute, as VC earned its third Liberty League win of the season.
Gonzales notched a pair of goals, including a game-winner, in the Brewers' 1-1 week. Against RIT
on Friday, Gonzales scored the game's lone goal in the eighth minute, thanks to an assist from freshman
Mattie Mrlik. After Mrlik slotted a pass to Gonzales, the junior midfielder faked his defender before striking his second game-winner in as many games into the bottom, right corner. The very next day against Hobart, Gonzales came out just as quickly, scoring the game's first goal in the third minute.
Tanner Sands chucked a pass from the right side into the box, where Gonzales chipped his fifth goal of the season over the keeper. Gonzales has been hot as of late, collected eight points over the past three games.
Andrews has continued to be dominant on offense, posting the Brewers' lone goal in their 1-1 week. In Vassar's 1-0 shutout over RIT, Andrews scored almost immediately out of the break to give the Brewers a game-winning edge in the 49th minute. The sophomore midfielder, who has notched 13 points over the past seven games, found the top right corner of the net from about 20 yards out.
Gallagher helped Vassar to a win in its only outing of the week, as she pounded down 14 kills on 22 swings, hitting .591 in a three-set win over Sage. The sophomore posted just one hitting error in the match, as VC earned its 16th win of the year.
