GENEVA, NY (September 27, 2015) – The Vassar women's tennis team had several players in action over the past two days at the ITA Northeast Regional Tennis Championships hosted by William Smith College. The tournament will conclude Monday morning with the singles championship, doubles championship and consolation singles final.
Vassar went 3-1 in the first round of the singles bracket Saturday morning, with Kate Christensen (Los Angeles, CA/Connections Academy) Kelsey Van Noy (Houston, TX/Duchesne Academy Sacred Heart) and Courtney Geiss (Charleston, SC/Laurel Springs School) all securing victories.
Christensen downed Liberty League counterpart Emily Wyman of St. Lawrence 6-2, 6-4 in her first round match, before falling to Alice McGinty 6-1, 6-2 in round two. After defeating another conference foe in Emily Laurilliard (RPI) 6-2, 6-2 in her first match, Geiss fell to No. 3 overall seed Carmen Lai of NYU 6-0, 6-0.
Van Noy won both of her matches Saturday to earn a spot in the round of 16 Sunday. She bested Vasundhra Gandotra of Ramapo College 7-6, 6-1, before grinding out a three set victory vs. Morgan McNeal of St. Lawrence. After topping McNeal 6-3 in the first set, Van Noy found herself on the ropes as she was just edged in the second 6-7. She finished strong in a decisive third set, winning 10-7 to advance.
Van Noy was then tripped up in her third round match Sunday, as SUNY-Geneseo's Mako Tanaka (No. 7 seed) knocked her out with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
Despite dropping her first round singles bout to Ithaca's Mami Blumenthal in a tough three set match (6-3, 1-6, 10-7) sophomore Morgan Fitzgerald (Encinitas, CA/Cal Coast Academy) kept her weekend alive in the consolation bracket. She picked up a 8-3 pro set win over Scranton's Anika Pornpitaksuk in the first round, before downing Andrea Valencia of RPI 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Fitzgerald made it three in a row with an 8-4 win vs. Hamilton's Claire Keyte, then earned her spot in the consolation final with a walkover in the semis. She will wrap up the tournament for the Brewers Monday morning.
In doubles play, Christensen and Fitzgerald notched a win in their first round bout Saturday, beating Geanna Heaviland and Taylor Thormahlen of RIT 8-4. Their run would come to an end in round two, as Mai Hashimoto and Mako Tanaka of SUNY-Genese advanced with an 8-0 decision.
After dropping their first round match, Van Noy and fellow senior Lauren Stauffer (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) made some noise in the consolation ladder winning their next two. The pair downed Carly Jefferson and Morgan McNeal of St. Lawrence 8-3 and then picked up a close quarterfinal victory against Ithaca's Haley Kusak and McKinleigh Lair. A walkover put the duo into the consolation final Sunday, but they fell short to Camila Garcia and Christine Ho of Rochester, 8-4.
