TROY, NY (November 14, 2015) – Junior Julia Cunningham of the Vassar women's swimming team posted a NCAA B-Cut qualifying mark Saturday afternoon in a dual meet vs. the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her time of 2:07.24 in the 200 fly was under the qualifying mark of 2:07.58, and Cunningham has now posted her first B-Cut of the season for the second straight year against RPI.
The Engineers came out ahead against VC in the team scoring, using 11.5 event victories to top the Brewers 188.50-111.50.
"Today was a good measure to see how we stack up against very tough competition," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. "We're back here in three weeks for the Liberty League Championships, so it was great for us to get a feel for where we'll be competing. We will be building our races and events until then."
Cunningham tied for first in the 100 fly with fellow 2015 NCAA qualifier Shanny Lin, as both touched the wall in 58.81. Cunningham was the outright victor in the 200 IM, edging the field with a season-best time of 2:13.45.
Freshman Kael Ragnini was the top finisher in the 1000 freestyle, outpacing the field by nearly 30 seconds with a mark of 11:05.55. Fellow Freshman Sammy Stone notched two wins on the day, first taking the 200 free with a mark of 1:55.78. She also placed first in the 500 free, swimming a season-best 5:12.43, a little over four seconds slower than the school record.
Freshman Mia Moraru again reset her school record in the 3-meter diving event, finishing second with a mark of 259.50. The score is just a point off of a NCAA Regional qualifying berth.
Senior Millie Nelson swam a season-best in the 200 back, finishing in 2:19.70 as Vc's top finisher.
Vassar will be back in action for its final home meet of the semester on Saturday. November 21 when the team hosts New York University at Kresge Pool.
