POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 12, 2014) – Senior infielder
Brett Zaziski (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) was tabbed as the Liberty League Player of the Year, while freshman
Adam Erkis (Villanova, PA/Radnor) was honored as the Liberty League Pitcher of the Year with the announcement of All-Liberty League squads Monday.
Zaziski earned Vassar College's second-ever Player of the Year honor, as Kristaps Aldins earned the achievement back during the 2005 season. A four-time All-Liberty League player as he earned first-team All-League honors at third base this year, Zaziski led the Brewers in hitting, slugging percentage, total bases, homers and runs scored in 2014.
Zaziski also finished his career as the all-time leader in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, doubles, homers, runs knocked in, intentional walks and total bases. He also holds single-season records for slugging, average, doubles, and on-base percentage. This year, Zaziski finished the regular season with a .404 batting average, connecting on five homers and 12 doubles.
Erkis was nothing short of amazing in his first season with the Brewers, as he also earned All-Liberty League First Team honors in addition to the school's first-ever Pitcher of the Year honor. Erkis finished the season with a 7-1 record, posting a 1.96 ERA while pitching a team-best 59.2 innings this year. Erkis allowed hitters to bat just .207 off of him this season. He tied for the second-most wins in a year at Vassar with seven, and posted the most shutouts in a season with two.
Fellow freshman
Trent Berg (Milton, MA/Boston College) was also tabbed as a Liberty League first-teamer, while sophomore
Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) earned a spot on the top team in the outfield and
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) was the First Team designated hitter.
Berg set the single-season record for wins at Vassar College this year, as he went 8-1 with a team-best 1.95 ERA. He also set the program's single-campaign mark in lowest batting average against, holding opposition to just a .188 batting average. He already is tied for seventh all-time in wins.
Johnson was a big part of the Vassar College offense, as he batted .336 with 24 runs and a team-leading 27 RBI. Johnson also led the conference in doubles with 16. Johnson was also third on the team in slugging percentage, posting a .519 clip. English was second on the squad with a .371 batting average, tying for the team-lead with 43 hits. The sophomore also drove in 25 runs in 2014, with 16 of those coming with two outs. English finished the year on a season-best 11-game hit streak as well.
Junior shortstop
Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) and reliever
Connor Cucalon (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius) were tabbed as Liberty League Second Team players. Garfinkel batted .343, slugging .545 on the year, posting 11 doubles, three triples and a homer. He also was second on the team in runs. Cucalon posted a 0.00 ERA on the season, going 1-0 with four saves, allowing just three runs all season over 16 innings of work.
Sophomore catcher
Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) and junior second baseman
Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) each earned Honorable Mention Liberty League. Wuenschell tied for the team lead with 27 RBI, while Casey hit .331 with 40 hits and 19 runs scored.
The nine players on the All-Liberty League teams is a program record, and 2014 is the first time the Brewers have earned both the Player and Pitcher of the Year in the same season. Of the group, Vassar returns eight of the nine All-League performers in 2015.
