Carpenter Shines At NCAA Atlantic Regionals Saturday Afternoon

Final Results

ROCHESTER, NY (November 15, 2014) – The Vassar College women's cross country team had a solid showing Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Atlantic Regional, hosted by the University of Rochester at Genesee Valley Park over a 6k course.

The Brewers finished seventh overall, accumulating 254 points, besting 33 other teams on the afternoon. The story of the day for the Brewers was the great finish from senior Cassidy Carpenter (Mountain View, CA/Mountainview), as she placed 16th overall with a 22:16.8. The time could be good enough for Carpenter to qualify for NCAA Nationals, depending on other teams selections into the NCAA Championships.

"Cass ran a great race. She was really out, out around 20th place and stayed there, and kept making the right moves and was able to stay effective," said head coach James McCowan. "I was really proud of her, she entered the season in great shape and was able to capitalize in it. She's had some great races and has a great chance to go Nationals."

Freshman Meghan Willcoxon (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) had a solid race as well for Vassar, as she posted a 26th place finish for VC with a time of 22:36.7. Sophomores Jemma Howlett (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Cranbrook Kingswood) and Laura MacDonald (Hallowell, ME/Kent's Hill School) placed 62nd and 72nd place respectively, earning times of 23:20.1 and 23:26.5 on the afternoon.

Senior Taylor Quinn (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) finished her career with a solid race, running the 6k course in a 23:37.2 for 81st overall place. Sophomore Lucy Balcezak (New Haven, CT/Hopkins School) struggled during the race to get position, and placed sixth out of Vassar runners with a time of 23:49.3, while junior Ava Farrell (Chevy Chase, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) earned 114th place with a time of 24.12.2.

"The women had a solid showing, we went out in exactly the way we needed to go out. We were in sixth at 2k, but Lucy had some trouble, and she slid back," said McCowan. "All of the women stepped up though, and we were able to hold onto and we'll see if that'll be good enough to get us there in the end."

Vassar College will find out this week if its finish will earn them a spot in the NCAA Championships.
