POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 10, 2014) -- Monday afternoon brought the release of the Liberty League Performers of the Week, and four Vassar College student-athletes earned honors in their respective sports, while one Brewer earned Honor Roll laurels as well.
Vassar College freshman
Olivia Martin (Vienna, VA/George C. Marshall) picked up Liberty League Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week, after finishing as the league's highest finisher at the ECAC Championships this past Saturday afternoon. Martin ran a smart, controlled race that saw her finish 33rd overall out of 338 runners, crossing the line in 23:31.79. The weekly honor was Martin's first as a Brewer.
For the second straight week, the Vassar men's squash team had a player honored as the Performer of the Week, as sophomore
Vincent Mencotti (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) chalked up the honor.
Mencotti posted a 1-1 week for the Brewers, as he earned the only victory on the day for VC against Haverford and NYU. Mencotti battled back to earn a hard-fought five-set win over Noah Vestrich-Shade from Haverford.
VC had a great weekend in the pool on Saturday, registering two wins over Skidmore College, and sophomore Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) earned Women's Swimmer of the Week Monday for her part in the women's win. Cunningham notched three victories in her individual events, taking first in the 200 yard butterfly (2:08.04), 100 yard butterfly (58.97) and 200 yard IM (2:15.44). She also was a part of the 200 yard medley relay that swam for a season-best 1:55.89. The weekly honor for Cunningham was her first-ever Swimmer of the Week honor, though she earned Liberty League Rookie of the Week four times last season.
On the men's side, newcomer Jonah Strand (Woodstock, NY/Onteora Central) had a strong swim against Skidmore, and earned Liberty League Men's Rookie of the Week. Strand had a big day for the Brewers on Nov. 8, claiming three individual victories in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.64), 200 yard breaststroke (2:22.40) and 200 yard individual medley (2:08.85). Strand was also was a a part of the 200 yard medley relay team that finished first, as the Brewers went on to top Skidmore 167-114.
Stand's teammate Luc Amodio (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) earned Liberty League Honor Roll after he earned wins in both the 100 yard backstroke (57.11) and 100 yard freestyle with a season-best 49.90 in the win over Skidmore. Amodio was also a part of the 200 yard medley and 400 yard freestyle relay teams that finished first for the Brewers.
