SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (November 1, 2014) – The Vassar College men's cross country team finished fifth at the Liberty League Championships on Saturday. The championships were hosted by RPI at Saratoga Spa State Park. St. Lawrence, which has never lost a Liberty League title, won again this year, scoring 29 points to best the runner-up, RPI, who had 40. RIT's Matt Giannino won the individual title for the second consecutive year.
The Brewers were led by senior
Andrew Terenzi (Malden, MA, Malden), who covered the 8k course in 26:49, just off his personal best time of 26:42.
Noah Trueblood (Bedminster, PA, Pennridge) followed, in his best showing to date. In addition to placing second for the Brewers, Trueblood ran a personal best time of 26:58. Senior
Sean Majer (Buffalo, NY, St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) and freshmen
Jesse Schatz (Mount Joy, PA, Lancaster Mennonite) and
Jared Freedman (Newton, MA, Newton North) rounded out the top five for the Brewers. Schatz and Freedman both had milestone performances, running personal best times of 27:35 and 27:44, respectively, and scoring points for the Brewers for the first time in their incipient collegiate careers.
The Brewers' biggest strengths this year have been their depth, pack running, and youth, all of which were on display again at the league championships. On a day when the Brewers were missing contributions from several of their top runners due to injury, other harriers stepped up, including Schatz and Freedman. In terms of pack running, the Brewers had a 54 second spread, third best of any team at the meet and one of the Brewers tighest clusters this year. With five freshman in their top seven, more than any other team, the Brewers will surely look to build on these strengths not only for the remainder of the season, but for many years to come.
The Brewers will next toe the line on November 8th at the ECAC Championships, hosted by Westfield State. The Brewers raced at Westfield previously this season when they competed at the James Earley Invitational, where they had a strong showing with a third place overall team finish.
