NCAA.com Release
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 8, 2013) – Vassar College senior
Andrew Guzick will be one of 32 players to participate in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Singles Championships as the field was released Wednesday evening at NCAA.com. Guzick's first round match will be May 23 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The selection of individuals is based on win-loss record and strength of schedule. Guzick owns a 17-10 record in 2012-13, including 13-8 in Vassar's spring dual matches. He reached the ITA Northeast Regional semifinals and owns wins over the #1 singles players from national Top 25 foes Mary Washington and Skidmore. Guzick has faced four of the 31 other players in the bracket in 2012-13 with close three-set losses to North Carolina Wesleyan's Robert Kjellberg and MIT's Edwin Zhang.
Guzick's 6-3, 6-3 win at #1 singles over Skidmore's Jimmy Sherpa helped lead the Brewers to a 5-2 win over the Thoroughbreds in the Liberty League championship match April 29 at Walker Field House. He is currently the eighth-ranked player in the ITA Northeast Region; a 2011 ITA All-American, Guzick reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals two years ago to become the first and only player in program history to advance that far in the national championship bracket.
The brackets and match times will be released shortly before the tournament, set for May 23-25 at Kalamazoo College's Stowe Stadium, begins. The Vassar men's tennis team will take on Marywood in the first round of the NCAA team championship Friday, May 10 in Middlebury, Vermont with the winner advancing to face ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins in Saturday's second round.
