Guzick, Cooper Sweep League Honors; Matsuoka Earns Honor Roll

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 18, 2013) – Three Vassar College student-athletes were recognized by the Liberty League for their weekly performances last week in an announcement by League Commissioner, Tracy King Monday afternoon.

Men's Tennis – Senior Andrew Guzick, Performer of the Week

Guzick pulled in two wins against nationally ranked No. 21 University of Mary Washington Saturday morning. He defeated Alex Blakhin 6-4, 6-4 and then teamed with senior Dan Freeman for an 8-4 victory over Donato Rizzolo and Evan Charles in doubles play.

Guzick also won the first set against nationally second ranked Robert Kjellberg of North Carolina Wesleyan, 6-2 and dropped the second and third sets, 6-3, 7-5.

Men's Tennis – Freshman Daniel Cooper, Rookie of the Week

Cooper highlighted the weekend for the Brewers at the Mary Washington Tournament with three wins. Cooper teamed with senior Nick Jasso in both doubles matches on Saturday against No. 12 nationally ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College and No. 21 nationally ranked University of Mary Washington. The duo pulled out a close 9-7 win against Mary Washington's Tyler Carey and Kaleb Nguyen and then held an 8-6 advantage against Johan Ljungdahl and Peter Hviid of N.C. Wesleyan.

Cooper also scored another win against N.C. Wesleyan in singles competition against Hviid, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6.

Cydni Matsuoka

Women's Basketball – Junior Cydni Matsuoka, Honor Roll

Matsuoka led the Brewers to the regular season Liberty League title with wins over Skidmore and Union. Matsuoka averaged 17.5 ppg and shot 50 percent from the field. Her 23 points against Union enabled Vassar to secure the top seed in the Championships. Matsuoka also averaged 7.0 assists (11 coming against Union) and 5.0 rpg.
