MIDDLEBURY, VT (September 16, 2012) – The Vassar College men's tennis team had a slow start at the Middlebury Invitational, only advancing one player to the semifinals in singles action this past weekend.

The Brewers will travel to the ITA Northeast Regionals at Ithaca College for a three-day tournament on September 28, 29 and September 30.

Freshman Christian Phelps competed in the semifinals in his flight against Skidmore College's Kit Green Sanderson. Phelps beat Jesse Butler of Bates in the first round on Saturday (6-0, 6-0) and Mark Westerfield of Tufts as well (6-7[6], 6-1, 10-7). Phelps, however, lost to Sanderson on Sunday 6-2 and 6-4.

In doubles action on Saturday, Andrew Gusik and Dan Freeman almost made the semifinals in their flight when they beat a pair from Middlebury, but lost a close match against the duo from Bates 8-6.
