Powerful Doubles Combination: Guzick Brothers Earn ITA All-America Honors

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (June 15, 2012) – The powerful doubles combination of recently graduated senior Ben Guzick and junior Andrew, were tabbed as Division III All-Americans by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). During the season, the duo was ranked as high as No. 6 nationally and No. 1 in the Northeast.

To earn All-America status in doubles, the ITA requires the team be a

1. Top 4 seed in NCAA doubles tournament, or
2. Win one round at NCAA doubles tournament, or
3. Finish in the Top 10 in the final ITA Rankings, or
4. Win USTA/ITA Fall Regional Tournament, or
5. Wins first-round match at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships ?(including teams who receive at-large invitations to the tournament.

The Brothers Guzick accomplished several of those goals by winning the ITA Northeast Regional Championships. To win the ITA title, the No. 2 seeded Guzick's won five matches and defeated Skidmore's top-seeded team of Jimmy Sherpa, a defending ITA Regional doubles champion, and Alec Hoblitzell, 6-1, 7-5 in the final.

Advancing to the National Small College Championship in Mobile, Alabama on October 13-16, the pair compiled a 1-2 record and finished 6th nationally.

During the season, the duo compiled a 30-5 mark at doubles. The Guzick's earned a huge win over the Williams No. 1 nationally ranked team of Richard Meyer and Bryan Chow on April 21. The Williams tandem won the I TA National Small College Championship in Mobile.

This past season, the Guzick Brothers were a unanimous All-Liberty League doubles selection and each player earned All-Liberty League singles accolades for the second consecutive year. Andrew was the Liberty League singles co-Player of the Year with a 24-7 singles record. He was ranked as high as No. 3 in the Northeast.

Ben Guzick graduated from Vassar in May. A 2008 graduate of the Harley School, Ben Guzick was a six-year letter winner and led his team to a No. 7 national ranking in his senior year. Guzick won the New York State high school doubles championship as a junior and was named All-State as well as district player of the year. A four-year Finger Lakes All-League member, Guzick was named a top 150 recruit in the class of 2008 by tennisrecruiting.net. Guzick transferred to Vassar from Carleton College where he was ranked No. 5 in the Central Region and No. 18 nationally in the ITA preseason rankings as a sophomore.

Andrew Guzick will return for his senior season in August. A 2009 graduate of the Harley School, Guzick was a five-year letter winner in tennis. He was named Finger Lakes All-League his sophomore through senior year and selected to the All Greater Rochester team as a junior and senior. At Harley, his team was ranked No. 10 in the nation his senior year and No. 7 his junior year.
