POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 7, 2012) – The Vassar College women's tennis team earned its 11th bid to the 49-team NCAA Division III Tennis Championships as one of three Pool B (independent) teams on Monday. The Brewers face the winner of regional site host Mary Washington and Grove City in the second round on May 12 at 2:00 pm the Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The tournament consists of a single-elimination format with the first, second and third rounds played at regional sites, May 10-13. Meredith College and the Town of Cary will host the team championships finals, which will be held May 21-23 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. Student-athletes selected to the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 9.
The Brewers (15-5), ranked No. 24 nationally and No. 9 in the Northeast in Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, recently finished second in the Liberty League, a conference which bears no automatic qualification. Mary Washington (15-7), ranked No. 26 nationally and No. 6 in the ITA Atlantic South, is a Pool A automatic qualifier from the Capital Athletic Conference, making its 24th NCAA Tournament appearance. Grove City (12-7) makes its fourth consecutive appearance as an automatic qualifier from the President's Athletic Conference.
The regional site also features No. 10 Johns Hopkins (16-5) with a first round bye and a first round matchup between Penn St.-Behrend (10-4) and Hunter (10-6).
The Brewers are led in singles by senior
Jennifer Beckerman, ranked No. 9 in the Northeast, and freshman
Ava Sadeghi, ranked No. 18 in the Northeast.
In its previous tournament appearance in 2010, Vassar defeated Transylvania 5-0 in the first round but fell 5-0 to No. 6 Washington and Lee in the second round.
