POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 6, 2012) – The Liberty League bestowed honors upon
Cydni Matsuoka of the Vassar College women's basketball team and
Michael Sankovich of the men's squash team on Monday.
CYDNI MATSUOKA, SOPHOMORE GUARD, WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, LIBERTY LEAGUE PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
Matsuoka spearheaded two Vassar victories to keep the Brewers in the Liberty League playoffs picture. She canned a foul-line jumper at the buzzer to lead Vassar past Skidmore in overtime and the following afternoon scored a team-high 16 points in a pull-away victory over Union. For the week, Matsuoka averaged 14 points and 4 rebounds, while shooting 45 percent from the floor and 44 percent from 3-point distance. She also added six steals. This is her third-straight weekly honor and her sixth this season.
Last year, Matsuoka was named the 2011 D3Hoops.com National Rookie of the Year, the 2011 Liberty League Rookie of the Year and selected to the Liberty League First Team and the D3.Hoops.com All-East Team.
A 2010 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, she lettered three years in basketball and two years in volleyball. A three-time First-Team Delta Valley Conference selection, Matsuoka led her team to four Delta Valley Conference Championships and two San Joaquin Sectional Championships. Also a three-time Sacramento Bee All-Metro Honorable Mention selection, she won the Coach's Award as a sophomore, the Hustler Award as a junior, and her team's MVP Award as a senior.
MICHAEL SANKOVICH, FRESHMAN, MEN'S SQUASH, LIBERTY LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Sankovich went 2-0 at the No. 1 position in two wins for Vassar last week, defeating Fordham's Andriy Kulak 11-2, 11-4, 11-6 and Brad Kolodner of Ithaca 11-8,11-5,11-9. This is his second consecutive Rookie of the Week honor and his third this season.
Sankovich lettered four years in squash at the Pingry School for head coach Ramsey Vehslage. His sister, Taylor, plays field hockey for Yale University.
