Seven Vassar Athletes Honored By the Liberty League

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 8, 2012) – After a stellar week of success, seven Vassar athletes, representing five different sports, were honored by the Liberty League today. Four athletes were honored as Performer of the Week, two as Rookie of the Week and one as league Honor Roll.

Kelly Holmes
Kelly Holmes, Women's Cross Country, Performer of the Week
Behind Holmes, the Brewers finished fourth in a competitive field of 12 teams at the Saratoga Invitational. Vassar had the fastest five-woman combined course time in program history, dating back to 1987. Holmes finished second overall in the 5k race with a blazing time of 17:56. There were 172 runners competing at Saratoga. This is her second such honor from the league. A 2009 graduate of Ridgefield High School, Holmes earned four letters in cross country. She was named All-Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) her junior year, and Second-Team All-FCIAC her sophomore and senior years. Holmes' high school team won FCIAC Championships twice, and was Connecticut class LL runner-up in 2006.

Sam Wagner
Sam Wagner, Men's Country Country, Performer of the Week
Wagner helped lead the Brewers to the teams best finish at the Saratoga Invitational since 1987. The fastest team time by two minutes and a 3rd place finish out of 16 teams, was prompted by Wagner's 25:55 time in the 8k race was good for 8th place overall in a field of 192 runners. This is his fifth such award from the league. A 2009 graduate of Minnehaha Academy, Wagner participated in the Minnesota High School Championship all four years of high school. He was named to the Tri-Metro All-Conference team three times and garnered Minnesota All-State Cross-Country honors in 2008. He served as captain junior and senior years, lettered in four years of track, and was named Tri-Metro All-Conference in track senior year.

Andrew Guzick
Andrew Guzick, Men's Tennis, Performer of the Week
Guzick went undefeated in singles and doubles play against both Union and Bard College this past Saturday. Guzick started with a close match against Union's T.J. Moor where he won 7(2)-6, 7(2)-6. Guzick teamed with Daniel Cooper in doubles to defeat Moor and Grant Zaccareo 8-2 in their first dual match of the season. This is his 15th such award from the league. A 2009 graduate of the Harley School, Guzick was a five-year letter winner in tennis. He was named Finger Lakes All-League his sophomore through senior year and selected to the All Greater Rochester team as a junior and senior. At Harley, his team was ranked No. 10 in the nation his senior year and No. 7 his junior year.

Daniel Cooper, Men's Tennis, Rookie of the Week
Cooper swept through the weekend with a 2-0 singles and 2-0 doubles record against Union and Bard. He fought a close victory against Union's Spencer Fontein 6-4, 6-3. He then teamed with Guzick in his 8-2 doubles win against Moor and Zaccareo. At Bard, Cooper beat Philip Poznansky 6-0, 6-4 in singles play. He teamed with Christian Lyon in an 8-1 win over Bard's Isaac Lertola and David Ball in doubles. This is his first such award from the league.

Hilary Koenigs
Hilary Koenigs, Women's Volleyball, Performer of the Week
Koenigs was named MVP of the 2012 Seven Sisters Championships. She led Vassar to a 3-2 victory over No. 25 nationally-ranked Wellesley in the title match. In the final, she had 57 set assists, which tied a career best. In five matches last week -- all Vassar wins -- Koenigs played 16 sets and had 157 total set assists, 9.81 per set. She had 32 against Smith and 31 versus Stevens. This is the second time in her career she has earned the award.  A 2009 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School, Koenigs earned three varsity letters in volleyball. She was named All-Greater Spokane League honorable mention her sophomore year. Koenigs was named All-Greater Spokane League 1st-team her senior year and.selected 2nd team All-State her senior year.

Chloe Hallum, Women's Volleyball, Performer of the Week
Hallum had a tremendous five game stretch for the Brewers, all victories, including the 2012 Seven Sisters title over No. 25 nationally-ranked Wellesley. In the title match, she had 20 digs. For the week, Hallum had 74 digs, 4.35 per set. She had 19 digs in a 3-0 sweep against Stevens. This is her first such award from the league.

Rebecca Smith
Rebecca Smith, Field Hockey Honor Roll
Smith spearheaded a 3-1 victory over Kean on Saturday, a team that defeated Vassar 4-1 the previous season. She scored Vassar's second a third goals. In a previous 6-0 win over Elms, she had a goal and had an assist, giving her three goals and an assist for the week. This is her first such award from the league. A 2009 graduate of Louisville High School, Smith lettered four years in field hockey. She was named All Sunset League her junior and senior seasons and was selected Team MVP her junior and senior seasons. Smith captained the team her senior season.
