POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 16, 2011) -- Although the Vassar College women's lacrosse team showed promise in the early stages with two one-goal leads, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute established control with a 6-1 run to end the first half en route to an 18-7 victory on a drizzly Saturday at Weinberg Turf Field.
Vassar led at 3-2 and 5-4 but RPI jumped ahead to a 10-6 lead at the half. The Engineers limited the Brewers to just one goal on seven shots in the second half.
The Brewers (4-6, 0-4) host Western Connecticut on Tuesday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m. RPI (6-4, 2-2) will host St. Lawrence and Clarkson next Friday and Saturday, April 22-23.
Vassar trailed 2-0 but scored three unanswered goals from
Elizabeth Feltch,
Moe Byrne, and
Michela Garrison in the span of two minutes put Vassar ahead 3-2 with 23:35 remaining. RPI's Emma Albert broke the tie at 18:58 but the Brewers regained the lead at 5-4 with 9:35 remaining from a pair of goals by Feltch and Bryne.
The lead was short-lived as Whitney Kukol and Tracy Breslin scored goals in the next minute for a 6-5 lead. RPI scored four of the next five goals in the half an pulled away from a close game with two crucial goals in the final minute. The Engineers dominated the second half with an 8-1 goal advantage and a 13-7 shot advantage.
Allie Arnal (6-4) made seven saves in goal to earn the win for RPI.
Heather Kesselman (1-1) kept Vassar in contention in the first half with five saves and earns the loss.
Six of seven Engineer scorers netted multiple goals. Alissa Peterson led the offense with four goals and two assists. Kukol added three goals and an assist.
Feltch led the Brewers with three goals and an assist while Byrne tallied two goals and two assists.
