Dominant, Undefeated Effort Lands Women's Fencing Conference Championship

Senior Jackie Kory was solid throughout the Northeast Conference meet.

WELLELSEY, MA (February 6, 2011) – Winning six matches at the third Northeast Conference Fencing multi-meet meant more than an unblemished record for the Vassar College women's fencing team. Six straight victories earned the Brewers their first ever Conference title on Sunday at Wellesley College.
In dominant fashion, the Brewers swept the field to capture the Conference title. With a second place finish by the men's team earned Vassar the men's and women's combined title.

Senior captain Jackie Kory was 15-2 in foil and sophomore Katie LeClair was 14-4. Senior captain Julie Carlsen and junior Brooke Schieffer were 15-1 and 17-1 respectively in sabre. Senior Sophie Courser was undefeated at 17-0. Junior Veronica Weser was 15-3, and sophomore Caitlin Clevenger was 11-2 in epee.

Now 30-6 on the season, the Brewers will next hit the road for matches against both New York University and Columbia on February 9.

Round 1: Bye

Round 2: Vassar 22 - University of Massachusetts 5
UMass fielded some challenging fencers and all three squads had to work hard to earn their wins. Foil and epee went 7-2 behind undefeated rounds from Kory, LeClair, Courser, and Caitlin Clevenger. Sabre went 8-1 with both Carlsen and Schieffer undefeated at 3-0.

Round 3: Vassar 21 - Sacred Heart University 6
SHU, which won the men's title, has a stable of talented fencers. In epee, Courser was undefeated, but both Weser and Caitlin Clevenger gave up one loss each to Mason from SHU. The squad still won convincingly 6-3. Foil was 7-2 with both Kory and LeClair undefeated and sabre was even better at 8-1 with Carlsen and Schieffer again both at 3-0.

Round 4: Vassar 16 - Wellesley 11
Wellesley was the toughest test of the day for Vassar. Matches have been close between the two schools for the last three years, often decided by one bout. Foil had a difficult time at 2-7 in this round with Kory scoring those two wins. Fortunately, at the same time, epee was engineering a 6-3 win and sabre was dominating at 8-1 with Carlsen and Schieffer again undefeated and freshman Hallie Stotler going 2-1.

Round 5: Vassar 20 - University of New Hampshire 7

Foil and sabre both went 6-3 in this round with LeClair undefeated in foil and Stotler in sabre. Some pesky UNH fencers managed to take one victory each from Kory, Carlsen, and Schieffer in this round. Epee cruised to an 8-1 squad victory.

Round 6: Vassar 23 - Boston University 4

BU won two foil bouts and two sabre bouts. The Vassar squads fenced well with foil and sabre at 7-2 each and epee was undefeated at 9-0 with Weiss earning her first win of the day.

Round 7: Vassar 25 Dartmouth 2
There was increased pressure in this round because Vassar needed to secure this last win in order to win the title. As each win added up there was more and more excitement. The deciding 14th win was scored by Carlsen in sabre. Leclair was fencing at the same time in foil, but a Dartmouth time out in her bout allowed Carlsen to finish first. There was no let up after the team victory was secured. Foil went on the finish 7-2 and both epee and sabre were undefeated at 9-0 each.
